Who are cossacks? They are mainly in today's Krasnodar (Kuban), Rostov na Donu (Don), and Stavropol/Ossetia (Terek). Also in Ukraine, Zaporozhye. There is a movie "quiet flows the don". Cossack culture is central to both modern day Russian and Ukrainian culture. While Tchaikovsky and Pushkin represent the high music, literature, ballet, royalty, centered in Saint Petersburg, Cossack music is about soul, expressed with simple but deeply sincere emotions. Cossack also has unique dancing traditions, sometimes with sabre.
Cossack music usually goes like 4 lines, and the last 2 lines would repeat, and frequently it would be sung with different voice pitches, such a high and a low, and the whole music is usually in a simple, repetitive melody. The themes are usually sun stars, moon, steppe, field, lake, forest, horse, cossack hat, with strong connection to nature. It's wide, free, and passionate.
